I Want You To Hold My Hand On My Coming Birthday!
“I want you to hold my hand on my coming birthday,” came her pleasant voice over the phone.
“Well, I can’t wait for the day to come. But the distance is a little too long, I’m afraid.”
“Distance doesn’t count nowadays. You bet I will.”
So our small talk ended.
Her QQ name was Little Lotus, and Trueman was mine. She lived in Zhejiang while I was in Shandong. We came across each other when chatting online. Her first word evoked a funny topic.
“I was dumped. Nobody wants me. Would you like to take me as your love?”
“Oh, my pleasure.” I replied, of course, in a facetious way, as is the common case with online chatters.
And then I consoled her with all comfortable words that I could come up with.
“You are a nice man,” remarked she, when we said goodbye that day.
Thus began our friendship.
At first, we just chat online. Later, we had telephone talks. She said she enjoyed hearing me talking. One evening, she telephoned me and we talked for more than half an hour.
As I can easily see, she is an active, brave and fashion-following girl of character. We talked about a lot of things and shared many views.
But she didn’t bring up the topic of love again, and neither did I. I treated her as my best e-pal, a friend with whom I could have a heart-to-heart talk without worrying about my secrets being let out. For a pretty long time, we just got known to each other by online names
Then one day, when I logged in my QQ, I found a message sent by her.
“Do you still remember the word you said when we first met? Are you serious?”
I felt it was becoming a little touchy.
I had a girlfriend then, who is my wife now. Usually taking online activities as a virtual life, I never expected the online relationship to go that far. Though we were congenial to each other, I had to say no to her resolutely, realizing short-term pain was better than long-term suffering.
“You are a good girl. I feel happy to have a friend like you. And I believe we can be good friends for ever.”
No further news came on the topic. We kept in touch with each other as nothing ever happened.
Then came her call as mentioned at the beginning of this article, which I just took it for kidding.
On September, 12, when I gave her a happy-birthday call, she told me she would give me a surprise.
At 7 p.m. on the same day, she called me.
“Hi, Will. I’m in Qingdao now. Would you like to come to meet me? I’ve told you I will let you hold my hand on my birthday.”
“What? No kidding?”
“No kidding. I’m just at the gate of Carrefour in Shinan. Can you come?”
“Oh, yes. I will be there in no time.”
So we met there.
Dressed in a white blouse and blue jeans skirt, wearing glossy long hair, she was very beautiful and lovely, though a little on the fat side.
“So it’s you, Will? Nice to meet you,” she reached out her hand.
“Nice to meet you, too. Little Lotus. Happy birthday to you.” said I when holding her hand.
We sat down outside the Carrefour under an ad. umbrella.
I called for two coffees.
“Qingdao is a beautiful city and a romantic place. It’s a pity that I didn’t come here earlier.”
“How did you come, by train?”
“No, by plane. And I’ve booked a single room in order not to disturb you. The reason why I’m here is that I want you to hold my hand in your hand and say ‘Happy birthday’ to my face as I said before.”
I stretched out my hand, held hers firmly, stared back at her and said, “Happy birthday!” And we both smiled.
We talked over coffee that evening for about two hours.
That was the first and the last time that we had met. Now we are still good friends. We sometimes chat online or over the phone and send cards to each other, and only that.
